Miles Wine Cellars, Himrod
Miles Wine Cellars is considered one of New York's most haunted wineries, where paranormal activity has been reported by owners, guests, and clairvoyants. The winery is housed in a Greek Revival mansion built in 1802 on the shores of Seneca Lake. The primary haunting is attributed to a newlywed couple who lived in the mansion in the mid-1800s while it was being renovated. The husband tragically fell three stories from the attic while working on a whale oil lantern, breaking his neck. His wife died shortly after, and her ghost is said to have rejoined him.
The spectral couple is occasionally seen in the windows or on the front porch of the mansion, embracing. This story is the inspiration for the winery's white blend, aptly named "Ghost," which features a couple on the label. In the mid-1980s, before the winery was established, owners Doug and Susan Miles experienced more aggressive poltergeist phenomena: Slamming doors, footsteps, and a cold mist rising from the floor were common occurrences. Electronic devices like PDAs and laptops would often malfunction or mysteriously turn off. The owners felt as though the spirits "owned" the house and wanted them out. According to the story, this violent activity ceased after a large piece of furniture with a cross on it was moved into the house. Today, the apparitions are reportedly much friendlier and tend to leave visitors alone during wine tastings. Other reported ghostly occurrences include: Ghostly orbs, Voices, talking, singing, and Crying sounds.
