Il Buco is described as haunted, with tales linking it to Edgar Allan Poe who is said to linger in its wine cellar, where bottles are sometimes found half-empty or moved despite being sealed. The building, once a tavern where Poe lived and drank, is a popular stop on Greenwich Village ghost tours. Edgar Allan Poe: Poe is the primary figure associated with the alleged haunting of Il Buco. He lived in the building's second floor and frequented the first-floor tavern, which is now the restaurant's wine cellar. Reports suggest that Poe's spirit continues to enjoy the wine cellar, with sealed bottles sometimes discovered to be partially empty. Some believe Poe's experiences at the building may have inspired his story, "The Cask of Amontillado". The building at 47 Bond Street was once a tavern. Poe lived in the second floor of the building and drank at the tavern on the first floor.
