The Empire State Building is rumored to be haunted by several spirits, particularly the ghost of a woman who committed suicide and the ghosts of construction workers who died during the building's creation. These ghost stories are often linked to the building's history of tragedy and death. The most famous apparition said to haunt the building is believed to be the ghost of Evelyn McHale. In May 1947, 23-year-old McHale gained tragic fame when she jumped to her death from the 86th-floor observation deck, landing on a United Nations limousine. A photograph taken of her body on the crushed car was famously published in Life magazine and dubbed "the most beautiful suicide". Sightings describe a woman on the observation deck wearing 1940s-style clothing. According to lore, she mutters about her lover dying in Germany before jumping off the platform and vanishing. Other accounts claim she vanishes just before she reaches the ground. Visitors, employees, and security guards have reported seeing this figure. Besides McHale, other paranormal activity is attributed to the building's dark history. At least five workers died during the building's construction in the early 1930s. Their spirits are said to still linger. Some visitors have reported hearing unexplained noises and feeling strange, cold drafts, which are thought to be the presence of these lost construction workers. The building has been the site of numerous suicides over the years. The restless souls of those who jumped are also said to be among the spirits that appear on the observation deck.
