COS, New York
The COS store at 129 Spring Street in SoHo, New York City, is considered haunted because it contains a historic "murder well" in its men's department where Elma Sands's body was discovered on January 2, 1800, after her disappearance with her lover, Levi Weeks. The 18th-century well is a remnant of the building's past, and the store has restored it and left it exposed for customers to see, which is also a factor in why the location is seen as a haunted site. Elma Sands, a 21-year-old woman, disappeared with her lover, Levi Weeks, in late December 1799.
Her body was found in a well on January 2, 1800, inside the building that would eventually become the COS store. Levi Weeks was tried for Elma's murder, with Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr serving as his defense team, but he was acquitted. The 200-year-old well was uncovered decades later and has since become a fixture in the store. The ghost of Elma Sands is said to haunt the location, with the NYC Department of Records and Information Services officially listing the building as haunted. The well has a dark, quiet energy associated with the unsolved murder and the presence of the body.
