The Old Bernardsville Public Library is said to be haunted by Phyllis Parker, who is known as the "lady in grey". She appears in a Victorian dress, and her presence is often marked by a scent of perfume, cold spots, and unexplained phenomena such as electrical disturbances, moving furniture, and the sound of typing when the library is closed. The spirit is believed to be the daughter of the library's original owner from the 1700s, and her haunting stems from the tragic hanging of her love, Dr. Byram, for treason. The primary spirit is a "lady in grey," possibly Phyllis Parker, who died after her love, Dr. Byram, was hanged for treason. The building was originally the Vealtown Tavern in the 1700s and was frequented by soldiers of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. The lady in grey has been seen in a Victorian dress, with one sighting captured on a security camera in 2014, showing her vanishing "like a jigsaw puzzle". Staff often detect the faint scent of perfume and walk into unexplained "cold spots". Reports include furniture being moved, file boxes being thrown from shelves, and the sounds of typing when the library is closed and no one is around. Electronic equipment can be affected, with fresh batteries being destroyed and the elevator sometimes moving on its own.
