Reports of paranormal activity at the former Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital in Morris Plains, New Jersey, were fueled by its long history of overcrowding, patient mistreatment, and tragedy. The main building was demolished in 2015, but stories of its haunting continue. Apparitions resembling former patients and staff are said to roam the property. Some accounts describe a distinct, old-fashioned nurse's uniform on a dark figure. Visitors claim the spirits of former patients haunt the underground tunnels that once connected the hospital's many buildings. These tunnels, used to transport patients, reportedly leave people with the feeling of being watched. Unexplained noises, such as disembodied screams, moans, and rattling chains, have been reported. The hospital's grim past, which included a high mortality rate and stories of abuse, has led some to believe a psychic energy remains within the facility. The hospital's unsettling reputation is rooted in its difficult history: Opening in 1876, Greystone was meant to address overcrowding at the state's other asylum. However, it soon became overcrowded itself, housing over 7,000 patients at its peak. Overcrowding contributed to the rapid spread of diseases, such as typhoid fever. Multiple fires in the main building, including a major one in 1931, resulted in damage and further suffering.
