Elizabeth V. Edwards School, Barnegat
The Elizabeth V. Edwards School in Barnegat, NJ, is rumored to be haunted by its namesake, Elizabeth Edwards, and other spirits. Paranormal reports, which led to a 2014 investigation by the TV show Ghost Hunters, include disembodied voices, phantom smells, and electrical disturbances. The school, built in 1930, served as the high school until 1957 before closing permanently in 2004. Strange and unexplained voices have been heard throughout the vacant building. Investigators from Ghost Hunters reported a powerful, inexplicable scent of chocolate on the second-floor hallway, which appeared to move on its own. A ghost is said to have the habit of flipping lights on and off, and a former security head reported seeing lights on in the building even after all the bulbs had been removed. Witnesses have heard lockers slamming, creaking, and a phone ringing inside the empty building. In addition to slamming lockers, there have been reports of pictures flying off tables. Some children playing near the school reported seeing a lady in a blue dress, believed to be the ghost of Elizabeth Edwards, who was known to wear blue.
