Yellow Jacket Mine, Virginia City
The Yellow Jacket Mine in Gold Hill, Nevada is believed to be haunted by the spirits of the 35 miners who died in its deadliest accident in 1869. Visitors and locals have reported supernatural phenomena, including mysterious footsteps, disembodied cries and shrieks, and the feeling of a warning to leave the mine. These ghostly manifestations are often said to occur on the mine's lower levels. Visitors have reported hearing heavy footsteps, cries, and shrieks, suggesting the lingering anguish of the deceased miners. Some accounts mention apparitions and warnings to leave, implying a spiritual presence guarding the mine. The 900-level of the mine is said to be a focal point for these paranormal activities. A fire broke out around the 800-foot level of the mine, causing wooden support beams to collapse and release poisonous gases. At least 35 miners died in the disaster, with the possibility of more being trapped. The bodies of the deceased were never recovered, a fact that contributes to the belief that their spirits remain.
