Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park is home to the well-preserved ghost town of Berlin, which has a reputation for being haunted. Visitors and paranormal investigators report hearing mysterious sounds and experiencing other ghostly phenomena from the town's former residents. The park protects the ghost town, preserving the historic buildings in a state of "arrested decay," which creates an eerie atmosphere. People hear disembodied voices, unexplained whispers, and the distant sounds of mining activity, such as the clanking of machinery, even though the mines are long-abandoned and sealed. The most well-known spirit is believed to be that of a miner named "Old Fred." His grave is located in the town cemetery, and visitors have reported seeing his apparition wandering through the town or standing near his gravesite. Some visitors have reported smelling phantom cooking, pipe smoke, or other strange odors that seem to come from inside the empty buildings. The cemetery and some of the dilapidated houses are often reported as having an especially heavy or unsettling energy, with some people feeling watched or experiencing cold spots. With no residents, and located at nearly 7,000 feet in a desolate part of Nevada, the isolated setting and decaying structures create an naturally unnerving experience, even for those who don't believe in ghosts.
