St. Mary's Art Center in Virginia City is a well-known site for paranormal activity, a reputation it gained during its former life as a hospital. Built in 1876, the building served as a medical center during Virginia City's mining heyday and is said to be haunted by the spirits of former patients and staff. Ghostly figures have been seen in various parts of the building, including the hallways and bedrooms. Whispers, moans, and other unexplained sounds are frequently heard, particularly at night. The sound of footsteps on the upper floors is a common occurrence, even when no one is there. Reports include objects being moved, doors opening and closing on their own, and lights turning on and off. Some experiences have been more aggressive, including people being touched or grabbed by unseen forces. This frequently reported apparition is believed to be the spirit of a nurse who once cared for patients in the hospital. She is often seen in the stairwells and hallways. A young girl's ghost is said to inhabit one of the upper-floor bedrooms. Her presence is sometimes felt as a cold spot, and giggling is occasionally heard. The former hospital was run by the Sisters of Charity, and many believe the spirit of a nun who cared for patients remains to watch over the building.
