Rhyolite Ghost Town, Beatty

Rhyolite, an old mining boomtown near Beatty, Nevada, is considered haunted due to its rapid and dramatic decline, which left a concentrated "lingering energy". Ghostly sightings and sounds are reported among its crumbling ruins, remnants of a town that vanished almost as quickly as it appeared. The most famous ghost story associated with Rhyolite involves Mona Belle, a sex worker who was murdered in 1908. Mona Belle was shot three times and killed by her lover, Fred Skinner, following a heated argument over finances. Some paranormal enthusiasts claim to have captured recordings of Mona's disembodied voice in the town, still giving Fred a final message. A prominent marker in Rhyolite bears her name, though it is a memorial, not her actual burial site. Her real body was returned to her family in Washington. The false grave maintains the legend of the "wild women of the West" and draws visitors who leave offerings. Some have seen a "brown shadow man" believed to be a former prospector who is unwilling to leave the town. Whispers carried on the desert wind are said to contain the residual voices of former residents whose lives ended tragically or who were overcome by greed. Visitors report hearing the echo of past years, suggesting a replay of the town's vibrant—and ultimately short-lived—heyday.
