The Old Washoe Club in Virginia City is considered one of the most haunted locations in the American West, known for its multiple spirits and history of tragedy. Many different ghost-hunting shows have featured the club, including Ghost Adventures and Ghost Hunters. Visitors and paranormal investigators report encountering several active entities throughout the three-story building. This spirit of a woman in a blue dress is often seen near the iconic spiral staircase. Some legends say she was a prostitute who was murdered at the club. A tall, menacing shadow figure has been frequently reported and even captured on film in a room on the second floor. Some believe he is the ghost of the Lady in Blue's murderer. The giggling ghost of a young girl is said to haunt the ballroom on the second floor. She reportedly died there in what was once a doctor's office, succumbing to injuries after being hit by a horse-drawn carriage. In the downstairs saloon, a spirit of an old prospector is known to hang around the bar. He sometimes steals unattended drinks, and some visitors leave shots of bourbon for him. The third floor is believed to contain more negative or demonic energy, with some visitors reporting feeling scratched or attacked. The spiral staircase: Many guests feel the sensation of a child's hand touching theirs on the way up the steep staircase, which was once featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not. The crypt: This space in the back of the building was used to store dead bodies during the winter, as the frozen ground made burial impossible. As many as 73 bodies may have been kept there during a typhoid epidemic, leading to intense paranormal activity. The ballroom: Besides the ghost of Gretchen, paranormal investigators have documented footsteps, shadow figures, and the smell of perfume in this area. The poker room: Located in the former millionaires' club, this room is active with audio interference and the scent of cigar smoke, a possible remnant of its former wealthy patrons. The club is known for causing electronic malfunctions, including drained batteries and audio equipment interference. Visitors also report hearing phantom footsteps and old-timey music playing.
