St. Patrick's Cemetery, Shell Creek
St. Patrick's Cemetery, also known as the "Glowing Graveyard" in Shell Creek, Nebraska, is the subject of several local ghost stories and paranormal legends. Located in Platte County near the community of Shell Creek, its reputation as a haunted spot is often fueled by the visual phenomenon of its old white headstones appearing to glow at night under the moonlight. The cemetery's nickname comes from the way the older, white-colored tombstones reflect moonlight, creating an eerie, glowing effect on clear nights. While paranormal investigators have explained this as a natural light refraction, the appearance still inspires local lore. One of the most prominent legends involves a tragic school bus crash on a bridge next to the cemetery, in which all the children on board were killed. According to the tale, the ghosts of the children still haunt the site. Another story claims that a murder victim is buried outside the official cemetery grounds. The location is said to hold a unique, glowing rock that can only be seen under specific lighting conditions. Some visitors have reported paranormal encounters, including one instance where the cemetery gates allegedly began to close on their own as they were leaving. A different legend focuses on a specific tombstone, Gilbert's Grave, which bears a poem. Visitors are challenged to memorize the poem, but the legend says they can't take any evidence of it with them. Old cameras would lose or ruin the film, and other attempts to record the poem would be thwarted.
