The Carnegie Library in St. Joseph, Missouri is said to be haunted by the ghost of a former librarian, with reports of footsteps, whispers of "shhh," and self-moving books, possibly on a balcony or in the stacks. Some staff have also reported hearing disembodied voices, the sounds of an intercom, or seeing a light-up ball move in concentric circles during paranormal investigations. Witnesses have reported hearing footsteps, disembodied voices, and the sound of an intercom clicking on. Books are said to move on their own from shelves, or even fall off entirely. Some have seen shadowy figures or a light-up ball move without any human interaction. A leading theory suggests the ghost is a former librarian, possibly checking in on the library's operations. During a paranormal investigation, one spirit box clearly communicated that the ghost hunters' presence was disrespectful.
