Mother in Law House, St. Charles

The haunted reputation of the former "Mother-in-Law House" restaurant in St. Charles, Missouri, stems from a local legend involving a lingering and unhappy spirit. According to the tale, the house at 500 South Main Street was originally a duplex constructed in the mid-19th century. One side was for the builder, Francis Cramer, and his wife, while the identical other half was for his mother-in-law. The haunted lore developed over time, and the restaurant became a subject of a 2015 episode of the TV series Ghost Hunters. The original specter is said to be the builder's unhappy mother-in-law, who never crossed over and is responsible for many of the building's strange happenings. Dinnerware and silverware have reportedly moved on their own, and drinks have been seen spilling without explanation. The presence of at least three other spirits has been reported: A six-foot-tall riverboat captain. A little boy who supposedly died in the building from a fall down the stairwell. A little girl. The presence of the little boy can sometimes be felt near the staircase, and some people have heard a man with a French accent. An antique "funeral box" with wreaths of delicate yarn flowers was found in the building, which some connect to a ritual of ending each night by saying, "Mother-in-law, we love you," to appease her spirit.
