Callaway Hall at Mississippi University for Women is the site of the "Callaway ghost" legend, which centers on a nurse named Mary who, during the Civil War, fell in love with a soldier, jumped from the clock tower in despair after he left, and now haunts the building, exhibiting paranormal activity like turning faucets on and off, riding elevators, and appearing by bedsides weeping. Mary was a nurse who cared for a wounded soldier during the Civil War. She fell in love with the soldier, but he left for battle and never returned. In her grief, Mary jumped from the clock tower at the top of Callaway Hall. Visitors and students have reported faucets in Callaway Hall turning on and off by themselves. The ghost of Mary is said to ride the elevator up and down. During the night, some students have claimed to see Mary sitting on the edge of their beds, weeping.
