The Satartia Bridge in Yazoo County, Mississippi, is said to be haunted by the spirits of the Yazoo Indian tribe and Civil War soldiers. Visitors claim to hear moaning and see strange lights over the Yazoo River that the bridge crosses. Local legend claims that if you linger around the bridge, you may hear mournful moaning sounds emanating from the river below. According to one story, the moans come from the lost souls of the Yazoo Indians, who chose to march into the river and drown rather than surrender to French colonial forces. Another account suggests the spirits are the crew of one of the 29 boats sunk in the Yazoo River during the Civil War. Some paranormal accounts describe seeing a yellow-green bubbling in the water at night, which is sometimes accompanied by lights. The bridge is also associated with a nearby pair of large oak trees known locally as the "Gates of Hell." Legend says a local preacher warned his congregation that the trees marked the entrance to a sinister place, and some people hear disembodied screams and knocks from the area. Residents near the bridge are often cited in paranormal stories. While some have told creepy tales, others dismiss them as simple folklore. The bridge was featured on a ghost-hunting TV series.
