Rowan Oak in Oxford, Mississippi, is widely rumored to be haunted, with stories fueled partly by former owner William Faulkner himself. While some paranormal occurrences have been noted, the most famous ghost story connected to the property was originally invented by the author. Documented paranormal activity: Staff members have reported objects moving on their own, such as a phone found on the floor after being left on a chair. A playful, child-like presence is said to reside in the house. Ghost hunters who investigated the property found no activity in the main house, but did find some evidence in the former service quarters behind the home. A photograph taken during renovations revealed a ghostly figure sitting on a bench, and parts of the background were inexplicably missing. A housekeeper discovered a pillow on Faulkner's bed that was sunken in the shape of a head. Some visitors and workers have reported a general sense of being watched or feeling a presence in various rooms, especially the guest bedroom.
