The Lyric Theatre in Tupelo, Mississippi, is widely known for its haunted reputation, stemming from its use as a temporary morgue after a devastating tornado in 1936. The spirits that reputedly haunt the theater today are said to be connected to this tragic history. The most famous spirit is a mischievous ghost named Antoine. Some believe Antoine was a caretaker, while others suggest he was a child who died during the tornado. His playful antics are said to include hiding keys and humming. Visitors and employees frequently report smelling scents of vintage women's perfume and cigar or pipe smoke in certain parts of the theater. This fragrant activity is often a sign that a supernatural event is about to occur. After the 1936 tornado killed over 200 people, the Lyric was used as a morgue, and bodies were stacked in the area under the stage. This area is considered the center of the paranormal activity, with reports of dark figures and apparitions seen by those brave enough to venture underneath. Besides humming, a variety of disembodied sounds have been reported. These include knocking, strange footsteps, and doors opening and closing on their own.
