Glenwood Cemetery is associated with the legend of the Witch of Yazoo, who is said to have died in 1884 and returned 20 years later, on May 25, 1904, to burn down the town as revenge for her death, a fire that actually was an accident. The grave of the "Witch" is located in the historic section of the cemetery and is marked by chains, which are sometimes found broken and mysteriously repaired by cemetery workers, according to Visit Yazoo and The Clarion-Ledger. The Witch of Yazoo Legend: The legend centers on a woman, whose name is unknown, who lived near the Yazoo River. She lured fishermen into her home to kill them and, upon being chased into a swamp by the sheriff, sank in quicksand. Before she died, she swore to return in 20 years to burn down the town. The witch's curse was supposedly fulfilled on May 25, 1904, when a fire destroyed much of Yazoo City. In reality, the fire started accidentally when a boy playing with matches set a house ablaze. A grave in Glenwood Cemetery, surrounded by a chain, is identified as the witch's burial site. The grave is surrounded by chains, which are an iconic and frequently repaired feature of the site.
