The Milford Mine in Crosby, Minnesota is considered haunted by the souls of the 41 miners who died in the 1924 flood disaster, with reported paranormal activity including the sounds of mining, spectral images of miners, the blast of a warning whistle, and echoing screams. The ghosts are often described as appearing fully formed, or as sounds and smells of the disaster, such as tapping pickaxes, a warning whistle, or the sounds of many miners working in the tunnels. One prominent legend describes the spirit of lift operator Clinton Harris, who tied the warning whistle rope to himself and was seen by recovery crews with the rope still around him, screaming a warning. The Disaster, When: February 5, 1924. What: The mine flooded when a surface cave-in breached Foley Lake, sending water and mud into the tunnels. Result: 41 of the 48 miners were killed, with only seven survivors able to escape. The last body was recovered nine months after the disaster. Visitors have reported hearing the distinct sounds of mining work, such as a pickax tapping on stone, a warning whistle, and screams. Some visitors have seen fully manifested specters of miners. The ghost of Clinton Harris, who worked the lift, is often reported, appearing with the alarm whistle rope around his waist, warning others. It's believed that if you hear the warning whistle blare right next to you, you should leave the area immediately, as you might be in danger.
