Both the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library and the Shapiro Undergraduate Library at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor are rumored to be haunted. While many stories exist, some are likely urban legends or creative folklore generated by students. Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library. This older, gothic-style library is the source of many ghost stories, particularly related to its labyrinthine stacks. One of the most famous and documented stories is not of a ghost, but of a man named Chheng Guan Lim, who lived secretly in the attic for four years in the 1960s. Following his discovery, students and guards reported faint footsteps, closing doors, and missing items in the library. Though Lim was alive, the stories became part of the library's ghostly lore, with the attic sometimes thought of as a haunted space. Another tale describes a ghost that can be heard among the library's stacks, sometimes appearing as a fleeting apparition among the towering shelves. Shapiro Undergraduate Library (UGLi) is a more modern building, but its long history has still led to ghost stories among students. The fourth floor of the UGLi is often cited as a location for strange occurrences. Students have reported unexplained noises, feeling a cold spot, or seeing items move. Some speculate that these events are tied to the library's history or an unknown presence.
