A young page died after falling two stories from the grand staircase in the 1880s. His spirit is sometimes seen near the staircase. A spirit of a man dressed in painter's attire is also reported to haunt the building. This could be the spirit of a painter who was killed during the building's construction. Some witnesses have reported experiencing sudden cold spots and unexplained winds throughout the Capitol building.
