Spider Gates Cemetery, Leicester
Spider Gates Cemetery is rumored to be a gateway to hell, a site for satanic rituals, and haunted by the spirit of a boy who committed suicide, though the cemetery's origin is a peaceful Quaker burial ground founded in 1740. The nickname "Spider Gates" came from its former wrought-iron gates' web-like appearance, which were removed due to vandalism, but are now often associated with its spooky legends. Despite the supernatural lore, the cemetery is a well-maintained, historic spot with ancient headstones, open to the public only during daylight hours. The cemetery's most famous legend claims it is the "Eighth Gate to Hell," a supposed passage to another dimension. Some legends suggest the cemetery is a meeting ground for devil worshipers and the site of sacrificial events. Another tale describes a boy who hanged himself from a tree within the cemetery, and whose spirit is said to still wander the grounds. A local legend says if you go to Marmaduke Earle's grave at midnight and say his name, you can hear him speak. Spider Gates is actually the Friends Cemetery or Quaker Cemetery, a historic and peaceful burial ground dating back to 1740.
