Sessions House at Smith College is reportedly haunted by the ghosts of Revolutionary War-era lovers Johnnie Burgoyne and Lucy, who are said to wander the house searching for each other, often near a hidden staircase used for their clandestine meetings. Other reported spirits include a student who died from a gas oven accident, a child who died in an attic, and a mother who murdered her own baby and committed suicide. New residents are often tasked with finding the staircase during Halloween. The ghosts of "Gentleman" Johnny Burgoyne, a British general, and Lucy, the granddaughter of Captain Jonathan Hunt (the house's builder). They reportedly had a forbidden romance and met in a secret stairwell within the house, which was also used as a secret passageway. Their apparitions are said to wander the house, forever looking for each other, according to local lore. A former resident who died after forgetting to turn off a gas oven, resulting in asphyxiation. A young boy who died after being locked in an attic. A woman from the house's days as a boarding house (before Smith College) who tragically murdered her crying baby and then herself. The house features a real, hidden staircase that was once a secret passageway. New residents of Sessions House are sometimes tasked with finding the staircase on Halloween.
