The Orleans Waterfront Inn is considered one of the most haunted buildings on Cape Cod and is home to several spirits, primarily Hannah and a former bartender named Fred. The Victorian mansion, built in 1875, has a history as a 1920s brothel and has been the site of numerous paranormal encounters. The inn was also famously investigated by the SyFy show Ghost Hunters. Hannah is believed to be the spirit of a "working girl" who was murdered in the inn when it operated as a brothel. According to a former owner, Hannah has a kindly presence but has been known to appear to people, including to the owner himself. A passing motorist once called the inn to report seeing a naked woman dancing in a fifth-floor window, a floor where no one was staying. Hannah is said to haunt Room 5, where she sometimes opens and closes doors. During the Ghost Hunters investigation, the team was reportedly able to communicate with Hannah by getting her to turn a flashlight on and off. Fred is the ghost of a bartender who worked at the inn during the 1950s. He reportedly took his own life in the inn's cupola. Fred's spirit is said to remain between rooms 4 and 5. Paranormal investigators have reportedly communicated with his spirit, and he has been known to respond to questions by turning off lights.
