Eunice Williams Covered Bridge, Greenfield

The Eunice Williams Covered Bridge is said to be haunted by the ghost of Eunice Williams herself, who was killed during the Deerfield Massacre of 1704 near this location. Legend suggests that on clear, moonless nights, her spirit appears to passersby, sometimes mistaking them for her family. Some traditions claim that if you drive across the bridge, turn off your headlights, and honk your horn on such a night, her ghost will appear. Eunice Williams, the wife of Reverend John Williams, was killed at the site because she could not keep up with the captives during a brutal French and Native American raid on the Deerfield settlement in 1704. Eunice's ghost is believed to haunt the Green River and the area around the bridge. Some stories say she appears to people who resemble her family, perhaps searching for them.
