Anna Maria College in Paxton, MA, is rumored to be haunted, with ghost stories centered on campus buildings, underground tunnels, and specific apparitions. As a former Catholic institution, some tales also involve nuns or religious imagery. Madonna Hall: According to a 2013 USC Digital Folklore Archives report, Madonna Hall, a freshman dormitory, is reportedly one of the most active paranormal locations on campus. The haunting is attributed to a history of deaths by suicide in the building. Multiple students have reported seeing ghosts, particularly during the fall semester. Miriam Music Hall: The Miriam Music Hall is rumored to be home to a specific ghost named Betty. Betty allegedly enjoys opening and closing windows and doors in the practice rooms. Some reports claim she plays the grand piano in the Main Performance Hall, even when it's locked. Students have reported hearing the two lowest notes on various pianos played simultaneously in different rooms. The campus is said to have underground tunnels originally built to connect buildings during snowstorms. Legend holds that a section of the tunnel between Madonna Hall and Miriam Music Hall collapsed during construction, killing several workers. These workers are believed to be a source of some of the spirits haunting the nearby buildings. In 2019, a YouTube video showed people exploring the tunnels, finding a locked room, and speculating on the history of the space. One report from 2019 mentions a pentagram painted on a wall and a ouija board on a table inside a room at the end of the tunnel under the science building. A ghost story collected by the Massachusetts Haunted Houses website describes an experience with a nun and a male spirit. The witness woke up at 6 a.m. after the encounter, which felt more like a visitation than a dream. Zecco Performing Arts Center: The Zecco Center is said to keep two seats permanently open for ghostly visitors during each performance.
