USCGC Taney, Baltimore
The USCGC Taney in Baltimore's Inner Harbor has a significant reputation for being haunted, second only to the USS Constellation among the city's historic vessels. Visitors, staff, and paranormal investigators have reported numerous unexplained phenomena, which are often attributed to the ship's extensive and dramatic service history. Staff and visitors, particularly those participating in overnight programs, have reported catching glimpses of ghostly figures moving in their peripheral vision or gliding across the decks and past open hatchways. Some paranormal investigators have recorded voices and other unexplained noises coming over the ship's inactive public address (PA) system. Noises like unexplained popping, tapping, and scratching sounds are frequently heard, especially in the berthing areas. In the engine and boiler rooms, mechanical sounds have been reported even though the machinery is not operating. Lockers in the berthing areas have been seen opening and closing on their own. Steel hatches have been reported to slam shut by themselves. Some visitors report an eerie feeling of not being welcome in certain areas, most notably the captain's quarters. The hauntings are believed to be connected to the tragedies that occurred during the ship's 50 years of active service, from 1936 to 1986.
