The Diamondback Tavern, Ellicott City
The Diamondback Tavern in Ellicott City was reputedly haunted by the ghost of Mary Berger, who supposedly hanged herself in 1962 after being denied a date by her parents. Visitors and staff have reported paranormal activity, including the sight of Mary's apparition, a flickering light from a cubbydoor, and the feeling of her presence. While the tavern is now closed, the legends of the "Judges Bench" area, where Mary's story is most associated, are still discussed as a local haunted site. The tavern was previously Berger's Grocery, a business owned by Mary's parents. Mary allegedly died by suicide in 1962 after her parents forbade her from going on a date. Her spirit is said to linger in the building, causing unusual occurrences. Some people have claimed to see a spectral figure or the apparition of a lamp and a dress form in a cubby door. Others have reported feeling a distinct sense of Mary's presence or hearing strange noises. The light within the cubby door has been known to flicker or turn on and off on its own. A specific area called the "Judges Bench" is considered particularly spooky and a focal point for these alleged hauntings.
The establishment is now permanently closed, but its stories and the legend of Mary Berger's ghost continue to be a talking point in local lore.
