Poplar Hill Mansion, Salisbury
Poplar Hill Mansion is considered Salisbury's most haunted house, with local legends of permanent spirits including two Little Girls (likely daughters of the Huston family), an enslaved woman named Sara who died in a fire, an enslaved man named Sam who may have been a caretaker, and the spirits of the Doctor and possibly Mrs. Huston. Reports of paranormal activity include shifting objects, apparitions, shadows, a high-pitched voice, women talking and laughing in the basement, and the image of a man descending the stairs. Sara, the Enslaved Woman: A young, unmarried enslaved woman who died in the nursery, possibly in a fire. Her spirit is believed to offer a consoling presence. The Two Little Girls: These spirits are believed to be daughters of the Huston family, possibly Sally and Elizabeth, who may have returned to a happy time in their childhood. Sam, the Enslaved Man: An older enslaved man listed on the 1828 inventory, who may have served as a caretaker. The Doctor and Possibly Mrs. Huston: Spirits of the original owners, with sightings of the Doctor on the staircase. Shadows and apparitions, and the image of a man coming down the stairs. A high-pitched voice and women talking and laughing in the basement. A recording has been heard of a little girl saying, "Mama, mama, are you there, mama can you hear me?".
