Pocomoke State Forest, Pocomoke City
Pocomoke State Forest is known for numerous paranormal accounts, including legends of a goat man, a six-fingered murderer, a screaming woman, and phantom babies crying in the swamplands bordering the Pocomoke River. The forest's ghost stories are so prevalent that they have earned it a reputation as one of Maryland's most haunted locations, with some tales even mentioning the spirit of Sampson Harmon at the historic Furnace Town. Some stories suggest the murderer's six-fingered hand print is a sign of a captain who murdered his wife. People report hearing the screams of a woman, possibly the murdered wife, or even a banshee-like cry. The spirit of a woman who lost her child in the river and was then murdered by her husband is said to haunt the area.
The "Old Tree" and "Hanging Hole": Tales also feature these specific locations within the forest. Some visitors report hearing the sound of a phantom dog barking in the forest. An urban legend tells of a school bus encountering a spectral school bus on a history trip, with sounds of footsteps inside and a skeleton nearby.
