Middleton Tavern is considered haunted by at least two different ghosts: Roland Johnston, a patron who may have been a regular or a more nefarious figure, and George Schmidt, the owner murdered outside the tavern. Visitors and staff have reported ghostly activity, including faucets turning on, lights flickering, items being moved, and the smell of cigars associated with Schmidt. Roland Johnston: This ghost is associated with minor poltergeist activity, such as turning on faucets, spilling coffee, and rearranging silverware or glasses. George Schmidt: The former owner, George Schmidt, was murdered outside the tavern after an argument and is believed to haunt the establishment. He is sometimes associated with the smell of cigars, which he used to smoke. Reports from staff and customers include lights flickering, lights being turned on, and items such as glasses or silverware being moved. Faucets have been reported to turn on by themselves. The scent of cigars is sometimes reported, believed to be linked to George Schmidt. The ghost of Roland Johnston has been known to "terrorize" wedding parties and servers, and some people have even quit their jobs due to encounters with the ghost.
