The Legend of Big Liz describes a ghost haunting Greenbrier Swamp and the nearby DeCoursey Bridge in Cambridge, Maryland. Liz, a formerly enslaved woman and possible Union spy, was beheaded by her master after he forced her to help bury Confederate treasure. Her ghost, often appearing as a headless figure in a black dress, is said to guard the treasure and lure those who follow her into the swamp, never to return. Some legends suggest she holds her severed head and offers to lead others to the money. Big Liz is the name given to a ghost who is said to haunt the area.
