The Dr. Samuel A. Mudd House Museum is described as haunted by various phenomena, including the ghost of John Wilkes Booth appearing as a human-shaped impression in the bed he used in the "Booth Room," mysterious knocking, disembodied footsteps, unexplained voices, and objects like electric candles turning on by themselves. Another alleged spectral entity is a mysterious "Light" that was seen and chased by neighbors around the property. John Wilkes Booth's presence: The most frequently cited haunting involves the bed in the "Booth Room" upstairs, where witnesses have reported seeing a human impression in the sheets. Visitors and residents have reported hearing footsteps moving upstairs and knocking at doors, only to find no one there when they check. There have been reports of unexplained voices heard throughout the house. During a Civil War reenactment, electric candles in the windows were seen turning on by themselves. Neighbors, including Louise Mudd-Arehart (a granddaughter of Dr. Mudd and founder of the museum), have reported a mysterious "Light" that would move through the house, rooms, and fields, sometimes disappearing into the swamp or a barn.
