Coffin Rock, Burkittsville
Coffin Rock, in the Black Hills Forest near Burkittsville, Maryland, is the site of a horrific 1886 incident in the fabricated Blair Witch Project legend where a search party for a missing girl was found disemboweled and bound together on the large, flat rock, only for their bodies to vanish by the time backup arrived. The legend is attributed to the Blair Witch and involves strange symbols carved into their foreheads, though the real Coffin Rock is just a natural formation in the woods. Several search parties were sent to find her, but one party did not return. Weeks later, a second search party found the missing group at Coffin Rock. The bodies of the first search party were found tied together at their arms and legs, completely disemboweled, with pagan symbols carved into their foreheads. When the second search party returned with reinforcements to remove the bodies, the bodies had vanished without a trace.
