Fort Knox, Prospect
Fort Knox in Prospect, Maine, is widely considered the state's most haunted fort, with paranormal activity reported in its dark passageways and corridors. While the 19th-century granite fort never saw combat, it has been the site of numerous reported deaths, and today, visitors and paranormal investigators have reported hearing voices, disembodied footsteps, and smelling the scent of tobacco. Visitors have heard heavy breathing, footsteps of boots on wooden floors, and doors slamming, even when they are chained. The scent of cherry pipe tobacco is said to linger in some parts of the fort, attributed to a former caretaker named Leopold. People have reported feeling a sudden cool breeze in a room that is otherwise warm, experiencing shoulder taps, and being touched. Paranormal investigators frequently find strong electromagnetic fields within the fort, even in areas without electricity. During guided ghost tours, participants have reported interacting with spirits, seeing cat toys light up on their own, and feeling a spectral child's hug. Leopold, the caretaker: A former caretaker, Leopold Hagy, is said to haunt the fort, with his footsteps, the smell of his pipe tobacco, and a dark, shadowy figure frequently reported by visitors. Mike, the construction worker: During the fort's construction, a man named Mike was warned not to smoke near a keg of black powder. He reportedly ignored the warning, lit a cigar, and blew himself up. He is said to remain at the fort permanently. Elizabeth, the little girl: Some investigators believe a young girl's spirit, named Elizabeth, haunts the area where the fort was built. The land is believed to have been a burial ground for the "red paint people," an ancient culture that used red ochre in their burials. During paranormal investigations, some have heard a child's voice say "mommy" when asked if they need something.
