The gravestone of Colonel Jonathan Buck in Bucksport Cemetery, Bucksport, Maine, is said to be haunted by a "witch's foot" marking from a curse. Legend states that Buck ordered a woman to be burned for witchcraft, and as she died, her leg fell off and landed on his monument, cursing him and his tomb. The mark, resembling a pointed stocking or woman's leg, is a stain on the monument that has reappeared even after the gravestone was rebuilt, according to the legend. Colonel Jonathan Buck, a prominent figure in the town's founding, condemned a woman for witchcraft. As the woman was being burned to death, her leg detached and fell from the fire, landing on Buck. Before she died, the woman cursed Buck, and the leg appeared on his tombstone as a mark of the curse. The monument bears a distinct mark in the shape of a pointed stocking or a woman's lower leg. The gravestone has been rebuilt several times, but the mark has reappeared on each new monument, fueling the legend.
