The ghost of a murdered maid named Sarah Ware is said to haunt Silver Lake in Roxbury, Maine. Her murder and the subsequent handling of her remains are the basis for the supernatural stories associated with the lake. In 1898, Sarah Ware, who worked as a maid, was found brutally murdered in the pastures of the house where she worked. After she went missing, residents eventually found her body. When it was moved into a coffin, her head detached because of the severity of the beating she had endured. Although a suspect was arrested, he was later acquitted. As a result, Ware's murder was never officially solved. For over a century, her head was reportedly kept as evidence in the Ellsworth courthouse. Legend connects the gruesome details of the crime to the restless nature of her spirit. Some versions of the story suggest that Ware's soul could not rest because her head and body were separated. Her ghost reportedly appears on foggy, rainy evenings. Visitors using the comprehensive trail system around the lake report an eerie feeling, especially when the fog sets in. Adding to the lore, the area that is now the lake was once a cemetery. The bodies were moved in the 1930s to create the dam, but some versions of the legend claim that Sarah Ware's body was left behind. After a hundred years, in 1998, Ware's head was finally reunited with her body in the Bucksport cemetery, but paranormal reports at Silver Lake have continued.
