McLellan-Sweat Mansion, Portland
The McLellan-Sweat Mansion in Portland, Maine, is said to be haunted by the spirit of Margaret Jane Mussey Sweat, the last private resident of the house. According to local legend, she can be heard wandering the halls of the historic home, which is now part of the Portland Museum of Art. Margaret Jane was a writer, art critic, and world traveler who lived in the mansion from 1823 until her death in 1908. Upon her death, she bequeathed the mansion to the Portland Society of Art. She had also commissioned the construction of an art museum next door in memory of her late husband, Lorendo de Medici Sweat. Today, the mansion is incorporated into the Portland Museum of Art and is a popular spot on local ghost tours. Visitors and staff have reported hearing the sounds of a woman walking through the halls of the mansion. Margaret Jane is believed to be still keeping an eye on the home she loved and the art collection she helped establish.
