Myrtles Plantation, St. Francisville
Myrtles Plantation is described as America's most haunted home, famous for the legendary story of Chloe, an enslaved woman who, after being punished by having her ear cut off, poisoned the Woodruff family and was then hanged by other enslaved people. Visitors report ghostly sightings, disembodied footsteps, and voices, with common phenomena including spectral figures in photos, a child named Katie tap-dancing on the porch, and other-worldly handprints in the infamous "cursed mirror" where the spirits of the poisoned Woodruffs are said to be trapped. In the most popular version of the story, Chloe was punished for eavesdropping by having her ear cut off by the plantation's owner, Judge Woodruff. To regain favor, Chloe attempted to poison the Woodruff family's cake, but she put too much of the poisonous oleander leaf into it, killing the judge's wife and two children. The other enslaved people, outraged by Chloe's actions, hanged her. The mirror in the entryway is said to trap the spirits of Sara Woodruff and her children. The handprint is said to reappear in the mirror after being cleaned or re-silvered. Visitors have captured images of transparent figures on the property, with the ghost of Sara said to be watching over her home. People report hearing gunshots, thudding footsteps, and the sounds of a little girl named Katie tap-dancing on the porch. A guest reported having blankets pulled up over their shoulders three times in one night by Chloe, and also reported communicating with a child's spirit via an EMF meter.
