Houmas House is associated with two main ghost legends: the "Gentlemen," which recounts the sounds of sawing and crashing near the site of 16 oak trees felled for levee construction, and "La Petite Fille" (The Little Girl), believed to be the spirit of Meg Preston, who died in the 1850s and was seen by construction workers during a renovation in the early 2000s. The Legend of the "Gentlemen". This story involves 16 men who died in the 1920s while cutting down 16 large oak trees, known as "The Gentlemen," to be used for building levees on the Mississippi River. Visitors and locals report hearing the sounds of sawing and loud crashing noises near the area where the trees once stood. La Petite Fille (The Little Girl). This haunting began during a major renovation of the house in the early 2000s. Construction workers saw a young girl, and mistakenly told the owner to keep her away from the site. The owner revealed he had no children, but when shown a photograph of the workers' sightings, they confirmed it was the same girl. The girl was identified as Meg Preston, who died on the property in the 1850s. Her spirit is believed to still appear to visitors, particularly around the renovation areas.
