X Cave/Carter Caves State Resort, Park Olive Hill
While official paranormal investigations focus on other caves in the park, X Cave at Carter Caves State Resort Park is said to be haunted by the tragic legend of two Cherokee lovers. The cave's name comes from its four entrances meeting in the center, forming an "X". The haunting story behind X Cave is a local legend about a Cherokee warrior named Huraken and the chief's daughter, Manuita. Huraken found a secret vein of silver inside the cave. He kept this discovery hidden, intending to make beautiful gifts for his beloved Manuita before asking her to marry him. After a battle, Huraken did not return. Fearing he was dead, Manuita took her own life by jumping from a cliff. Huraken was not dead. He had been in the cave preparing a special gift for Manuita. On his way back to her, he discovered her body and hid it in the cave to mourn and watch over it. When the chief found out, he wrongly believed Huraken had killed his daughter. He sentenced the warrior to death. Huraken's last request was to see his love one more time. He was taken to the cave but never came out again, presumably dying beside her. Years later, two skeletons and some silver pieces were found deep inside the cave, leading many to believe they were the remains of the ill-fated lovers.
