Waverly Hills Sanatorium, Louisville
Waverly Hills Sanatorium is widely regarded as one of the most haunted places in the world, with its chilling reputation stemming from the immense suffering and death that occurred within its walls. The paranormal activity is attributed to its history as a tuberculosis hospital from 1910 to 1961, and later as a neglectful geriatric center until 1982. Apparitions in the form of shadowy figures are frequently reported throughout the building. Cries, whispers, and the unsettling sound of children's laughter have been heard in empty hallways and rooms. Slamming doors, phantom footsteps, and a humming sound (captured on EVP, or Electronic Voice Phenomenon) add to the unsettling atmosphere. Figures of a man in a white coat or ghostly nurses have been seen drifting through corridors. Some visitors have reported being touched, having their hair pulled, or being pushed. Infamous haunted hot spots: The Body Chute, Used to discreetly transport the thousands of bodies of deceased patients, the 500-foot-long tunnel is considered a major center of paranormal activity. Disembodied voices and ghostly apparitions have been reported within the chute. Room 502, Perhaps the most notorious location in the sanatorium, this room is the alleged site of two nurse suicides. 1928: A 29-year-old nurse named Mary Hillenburg reportedly hanged herself from the light fixture. 1932: Another nurse working in the room is said to have jumped to her death from the rooftop balcony. Visitors have felt a strong sense of despair and have been told to "get out" by a disembodied voice in this room. The ghost of a young boy named Timmy is said to haunt the third floor. He was rumored to have died at the sanatorium and enjoys playing games. Visitors sometimes bring balls to the building, hoping for an interaction with Timmy. Children's Ward and Rooftop, The rooftop once served as a sun porch for young patients. The ghosts of children who died there are said to remain. The sound of children's laughter and the nursery rhyme "Ring around the Rosie" are sometimes heard. The Morgue, Located on the first floor, the morgue is a hot spot for ghostly activity. Paranormal investigators have captured unexplained photos and sounds here. Some stories describe the ghosts of a homeless man and his dog who allegedly fell down an elevator shaft in the morgue.
