The Sigma Nu fraternity house at the University of Kansas is rumored to be haunted by Virginia, the ghost of a young maidservant who died in the house in 1911 under suspicious circumstances, possibly at the hands of Governor Stubbs' wife. Reports of her haunting include disembodied footsteps, rattling doorknobs, unexplained slamming doors, and the apparition of a woman in a white gown, sometimes seen looking out windows or wandering the hallways. Virginia was a 14-year-old maid to former Kansas Governor William Stubbs and his wife. After Governor Stubbs returned from a trip, he found Virginia hanging from the ballroom chandelier. It is widely believed that the Governor's wife, out of jealousy over rumors of an affair between Virginia and the Governor, murdered Virginia and then attempted to stage the scene as a suicide. The spectral form of a woman, often described as having long black hair and wearing a white gown, is seen in various parts of the house. Eerie footsteps, rattling doorknobs, and children running down hallways are frequently heard. Doors that won't stay closed, flickering lights, and the faint scent of lavender-scented perfume have also been reported. After Virginia's death, Governor Stubbs had her body cremated and placed the ashes within a wall of a fireplace in the house. Some believe Virginia's spirit is attached to the property and does not wish to harm anyone.
