Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery is said to be haunted by the ghost of Catherine Sutter, an early pioneer woman who died from pneumonia while searching for her children who disappeared in a winter storm. Her ghost, often seen with a lantern, is believed to still wander the cemetery's grounds, calling for her children, even though they were later found and reunited with their father. The Legend of Catherine Sutter: Catherine Sutter was a pioneer woman whose husband and children were on their way to Oregon. One day, the children went out to gather firewood and never returned. Catherine stayed behind to search for them, but the search was eventually called off, and her husband moved on. Catherine never learned that her children were found by the Meskwaki people and turned over to the authorities, as she succumbed to pneumonia from her searching. Her spirit is said to be seen in the cemetery, carrying a lantern and calling out for her lost children. General Custer's ghost is also reported to appear at the fort, particularly near the Rookery. The Rookery itself, the oldest house on the post, is a reported hotspot for paranormal activity.
