Fort Hays is reportedly haunted by the "Blue Light Lady," the spirit of Elizabeth Polly, who died of cholera in 1867 while tending to patients during an epidemic at the U.S. Army Post. Her apparition is often seen as a luminous blue light, especially near her original burial site on the side of Sentinel Hill. Who is the Blue Light Lady? Elizabeth Polly: She was the wife of the fort's assistant doctor and assisted him during a cholera epidemic. She contracted and died from the disease in 1867. She requested to be buried at the top of Sentinel Hill but was instead buried on its side. The most common reported sighting is a luminous blue light, which some believe is the spirit of Elizabeth Polly. These reports began in the late 1800s and have continued to the present day.
