The Strayer-Wood Theatre at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls is reportedly haunted by a poltergeist known as "Zelda". This spirit, believed to be the theatre's resident ghost, is a source of strange noises and phenomena, particularly when the building is empty. According to a 2022 report in the student newspaper, The Northern Iowan, the haunting incidents attributed to Zelda include: Theatre students and faculty have reported hearing strange and disembodied noises inside the building. The unseen presence is said to sometimes yell insults at people. Zelda reportedly plays the piano and produces sounds resembling a baby crying. Doors in the theatre are said to open and close on their own.Zelda was described in the student paper as "the spirit of the theater that is neither seen nor heard". The hauntings have become a well-known part of campus folklore, with students and faculty acknowledging the presence of their spectral theatrical companion.
