Squirrel Cage Jail, Council Bluffs
The Squirrel Cage Jail in Council Bluffs, Iowa, is described as a haunted historical site with reports of unexplained phenomena including disembodied footsteps, dark shadows, voices, doors opening and closing, and objects moving. Located in the world's only three-story rotary jail, this 1885 building is considered haunted by former inmates and jailers, with notable alleged entities including Jake Bird, a notorious axe murderer. Its notoriety has drawn paranormal investigators and feature on shows like Ghost Adventures. Reports include footsteps, whispers, and voices, some of which are believed to be from former inmates or jailers. Dark shadow figures, including one described as boots approaching a cell, have been reported. Visitors and investigators have reported doors slamming and opening, and objects moving on their own. Paranormal investigators have recorded Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVPs) and detected electronic magnetic field (EMF) hits. Some have experienced their hair being pulled and a general sense of a presence within the jail. Jake Bird: A former inmate and convicted axe murderer, Bird is believed by some to still roam the jail. He was the last person hanged in Pottawattamie County, in 1949. The jail's signature three-story, circular design allows for the entire cell block to rotate, with only one cell door accessible at a time.
