Matsell Bridge/Matt's Bridge, Central City
The Matsell Bridge near Central City, Iowa, is the subject of several haunted urban legends, most notably a classic "Ghost Bridge" tale. This legend is sometimes referred to as the story of "Crybaby Bridge," though that name is also associated with other haunted locations in Iowa. A school bus supposedly crashed on or near the bridge, and a number of children died in the disaster. The ghosts of the children are said to linger at the bridge. If you put your car in neutral while stopped on the bridge, the spectral children will push the car to safety to prevent another tragedy. To prove the event, the legend states that if you put powder on your car's bumper beforehand, you will see small, dusty handprints of the children after being pushed. While paranormal activity is unproven, some people describe strange sensations when visiting the bridge area: Some visitors have reported feeling an unsettling chill or an eerie atmosphere when crossing the bridge. One account from a ghost-hunting video describes feeling a spirit presence at the bridge and nearby hiking trails, though it was described as a benign spirit. Some have also reported seeing a figure that suddenly vanishes.
